Furcal's season in jeopardy

The St. Louis Cardinals placed Rafael Furcal (SS, STL) on the disabled list August 31 with what for now is being called a "strained right elbow." The team may yet learn, however, that its starting shortstop has torn his ulnar collateral ligament, which would end his season. Furcal has provided owners decent return on what was likely a modest investment at this past spring's drafts, and those owners should have known from Furcal's "F" health grade that they were living on borrowed time after 477 ABs on the season.

Barring an acquisition, the Cardinals plan to play Daniel Descalso (2B/SS, STL) at shortstop. Descalso had a brief stint in mid-August as manager Mike Matheny's majority-time...
