PLAYING TIME: Dirks carving out a role in DET

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Dirks capitalizing on PT opportunity

Andy Dirks (DH, DET) has carved himself a fine little early-season niche in the bottom of the Tigers’ lineup.  After racking up 24 hits in 56 spring training AB (.429 BA), Dirks has served as the primary DH against right-handed pitchers from the 7-8 spots in the batting order and has 6 hits in 18 AB through Friday.  Almost an afterthought in Detroit’s few spring position-battle discussions, can Dirks be expected to build on his solid start?
