It's been another tough week for starting pitching, with a cumulative 4.64 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through Saturday's games. That brings the season totals for starting pitchers to a 4.48 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, significantly higher than last season's 4.05 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Relief pitchers have done a better job of weathering the new rules and offensive environment. Whereas starters have seen their ERA rise by more than 10% and their WHIP by more than 6%, reliever ERA is up only 5% from last year (3.86 to 4.06) and reliever WHIP is up just 2% (1.28 to 1.31). Deploying highly-skilled relievers to protect ratios is looking like an attractive strategy this year, especially as temperatures and scoring increase.
