DAILY MATCHUPS: Schmidt looks to back up fine start in his last

Today's Overview/Schedule/Weather: As far as the MLB schedule goes, August goes out not with a bang but a whimper. Just four games are on the slate for the final day of the month. The teams in action are ATL, DET, LA, MIA, NYY, SD, SF, and WAS. The Ratings chart is not full of big names, but the talent spread could certainly be worse. Cooler temps are called for on the baseball weather map.

Notable Starts:

Clarke Schmidt is coming off a PQS-5 at Tampa Bay and has held foes to 2 ER or less in five of eight second-half starts. Over that stretch, Schmidt has been keeping walks in check (1.9 BB/9) while getting more ground balls and fewer barrels. He faces a Detroit offense that has filed a high 27.5% whiff rate since Aug. 16.
