ROTISSERIE: Stealing past the quarter mark

As spring training 2023 was wrapping up, we took a look at the early base-stealing trends as a result of the new-for-2023 rule changes. We discovered that teams were running more and showing greater success rates this spring than in recent seasons past. With about a quarter of the season now complete through Sunday May 14 (AL teams averaging 41.9 games, NL teams averaging 41.5 games), it’s time to check in on the results to date.

Let’s start with a quick reminder of the terminology:

Stolen Base Attempt % -- how often does the runner steal when he gets on first base: (SBA%) = (SB + CS) / (BB + Singles + HBP)

Stolen Base Success Rate (SB%) = SB / (SB + CS)
