Let's take a closer look at a bunch of noteworthy guys, with our usual focus on those who may be available in deep leagues.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Chris Archer (RHP, TAM) flashed the second-highest average fastball velocity (94.9 mph) in July of any AL SP with at least 20 IP that month. With his top prospect upside and 0.73 ERA, 0.65 WHIP line in July, it may be easy to feel comfortable with him already. Just keep in mind that he was the beneficiary of a trifecta of help in July: 16% H%, 91% S%, 2% hr/f. His base skills were league average: 5.4 Dom, 1.7 Ctl, 45% GB%, 73 BPV. He remains a gem in keeper leagues, but bank on inconsistency down the stretch.

A.J. Griffin (RHP, OAK) had a mediocre 4.86 ERA in July, but his base skills were much better than that: 7.3 Dom, 1.5 Ctl, 33% GB%, 102 BPV. He was hurt by a 2.7 HR/9, which was the product of both his high flyball rate as well as an elevated 19% hr/f. There's some stretch-run profit here.

Josh Johnson (RHP, TOR) entered the season as a huge risk due to his declining fastball velocity and chronic shoulder concerns. And his results in July (7.71 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) have put him on the free agent wire in many leagues. But there is some nice profit potential here over the final two months. His base skills in July were excellent: 9.8 Dom, 2.8 Ctl, 45% GB%, 124 BPV. And they came on the heels of the 118 BPV he posted in June. His implosion in July was the result of three unfriendly indicators: 35% H%, 55% S%, 31% hr/f. Regarding his fastball, it's been at 93 mph in consecutive months, meaning this is shaping up to be the first year since 2009 that his fastball isn't in decline. He's a good stretch-run upside play again if you can stomach his occasional explosions.

Corey Kluber (RHP, CLE) continues to post elite skills month after month. His BPV by month so far in 2013: 174, 139, 115, 113. He even added a 50% GB% to the mix in July. With a 3.19 xERA, his 3.77 ERA has more upside than most people will realize.

Bud Norris (RHP, BAL) was viewed as a #4-type starter when his name was being thrown out at the trade deadline, a perception that wasn't helped by the 6.38 ERA and 1.58 WHIP he posted in July. Likewise, his skills dipped from a 101 BPV in June to this mediocre line in July: 7.1 Dom, 4.1 Ctl, 32% GB%, 26 BPV. Before you dump him, keep in mind that he's got the ingredients for a strikeout spike. He had a 93 mph average fastball in July, and his swinging strike rate jumped from a nice 9.5% to an upper-tier 10.8%. Only 10 starting pitchers in the AL had a higher SS% in July than Norris did. If he can find a groundball pitch, he could take a big step forward.

Iván Nova (RHP, NYY) reminded us in July why he entered 2013 as an excellent buy low target: 31 IP, 2.03 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 8.4 Dom, 2.6 Ctl, 51% GB%, 110 BPV. His 93.8 mph average fastball velocity was the fourth-highest in the AL that month. Nova's emergence has been for real.

Todd Redmond (RHP, TOR) came out of nowhere in July to post these excellent stats and skills: 28 IP, 3.81 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 9.5 Dom, 2.9 Ctl, 34% GB%, 106 BPV. He was drafted by PIT in the 39th round of the June 2004 draft. He has a long history in the minors of posting league-average skills, but both his Dom and Ctl have improved since the beginning of 2012. Problem is, he has consistently been a flyball pitcher, a dangerous recipe given his home park and division. Once he's recalled again from Triple-A, speculate on the skills but keep him on a short leash.

Jered Weaver (RHP, LAA) went back to his soft-tossing, elite skill profile in July: 8.1 Dom, 1.8 Ctl, 40% GB%, 117 BPV. While he's one of the few SP who have consistently been able to stave off H%, S%, and hr/f regression over his career, his margin for error keeps getting smaller and smaller. His fastball velocity has dipped to even new lows. His FB velocity trend by season over the last four years: 89.9, 89.1, 87.8, 86.6. He'll have a much harder time inducing soft contact with a mid-80s fastball.

C.J. Wilson (LHP, LAA) has rebounded nicely after a tough April. Improved control has been the key. His Ctl by month: 5.2, 3.5, 3.1, 2.7. He has posted a 90+ BPV in consecutive months, including these skills in July: 8.5 Dom, 2.7 Ctl, 42% GB%, 99 BPV. Our pessimism in April appears to have been premature. Keep using him.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Homer Bailey (RHP, CIN) has blossomed into a legit ace in 2013. After years of frustrating owners due to his slow starts and hot finishes, Bailey has posted this monthly BPV so far in 2013: 128, 113, 150, 151. Those skills have been driven by consistent dominance. His Dom by month: 9.0, 9.0, 9.0, 9.1. He even gained one mph on his fastball in July, which averaged 94.8 mph that month. And his swinging strike rate increased by 1.4% to a top-tier 12.9%. Don't even think about benching him.

Chris Capuano (LHP, LA) quietly has pitched really well over the last two months. He had a 152 BPV in a small 15 IP sample in June and carried that forward to July: 7.1 Dom, 0.8 Ctl, 40% GB%, 122 BPV. He's a good bet to post a sub-4.00 ERA and low WHIP in the second half.

Tyler Chatwood (RHP, COL) made some nice under-the-surface gains in July even as his surface stats began to regress. Behind his 4.63 ERA and 1.51 WHIP that month was a 1.1 mph increase in his fastball to 93.6 mph, as well as a 3.5% jump in his swinging strike rate. With a solid groundball tilt and 2.3+ Cmd in three of four months so far this season, Chatwood's emergence this season has been mostly for real. At age 23, he'll head into 2014 with some breakout potential.

Gerrit Cole (RHP, PIT) showed flashes in July of his top-of-the-rotation upside: 3.45 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 7.5 Dom, 2.3 Ctl, 50% GB%, 100 BPV. He also had an average fastball velocity of 95.5 mph. He's still not a legit strikeout machine (low 7.4% swinging strike rate), but he is laying the foundation for future growth.

Patrick Corbin (LHP, ARI) is showing no signs of slowing down. He posted the fourth-best skills of any NL SP in July: 9.9 Dom, 1.8 Ctl, 49% GB%, 156 BPV. His Dom spike was supported by a huge 5.2% increase in his swinging strike rate. Just keep in mind that nearly all of his success has come due to one pitch: an unhittable slider. Batters have a .186 Slg against that pitch the near five hundred times he has thrown it. He'll be overvalued on draft day next season, but for now, keep riding him.

Gio González (LHP, WAS) had a horrible 5.34 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in July, primarily due to one awful start. His base skills in July were actually great: 11.0 Dom, 3.1 Ctl, 46% GB%, 137 BPV. He was done in by a 42% H% and 19% hr/f. That hit rate was the highest of any SP in MLB that month. Roster him with confidence.

Dan Haren (RHP, WAS) does not get treated like an ace anymore, primarily due to his shaky durability and dwindling fastball velocity. But his skills in July were reminiscent of his elite days: 10.2 Dom, 2.4 Ctl, 35% GB%, 132 BPV. He should finish strong if he can stay healthy.

Matt Harvey (RHP, NYM) had the best skills of any SP in July: 10.3 Dom, 1.6 Ctl, 50% GB%, 170 BPV. His 96.6 mph average fastball velocity was also the highest of any SP. If you're thinking about dealing an ace for some hitting help down the stretch, don't include Harvey in the discussion.

Edwin Jackson (RHP, CHC) delivered in July on the profit potential we've forecasted out of him over the last six weeks. He posted a 1.83 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 34 IP during July. The recipe was elite command and the third-highest groundball rate in the NL: 5.8 Dom, 1.6 Ctl, 61% GB%, 100 BPV. He remains a good hold over the final two months.

Taylor Jordan (RHP, WAS) will be shut down after a few more starts, but the high command + GB machine profile he flashed in July makes him a guy to stash in keeper leagues: 5.8 Dom, 0.9 Ctl, 58% GB%, 117 BPV.

Tim Lincecum (RHP, SF) took us back a few years with his dominating skill set in July: 12.4 Dom, 2.8 Ctl, 43% GB%, 167 BPV. Only the skills of Matt Harvey (RHP, NYM) were better that month. Lincecum's 4.50 ERA would have been a lot lower had he not been victimized by an extremely high 23% hr/f. We can no longer count on consistency from him (BPV last 10 months: 82, 36, 108, 126, 42, 41, 56, 98, 75, 167). But if your rotation needs a push down the stretch, he's got enough left in the tank to provide it.

Kris Medlen (RHP, ATL) reportedly was close to being ousted from the ATL rotation in July. It's a good thing that didn't happen, because a closer look reveals that a 41% H% was the primary driver of his 6.41 ERA and 1.84 WHIP that month. And his high 10.4% swinging strike rate suggests that his 6.1 Dom was lower than it should have been. He's a good bet to rebound in August.

Charlie Morton (RHP, PIT) was victimized by a crazy 33% hr/f in July, the highest hr/f of any SP with 20 IP during that month. Morton's base skills in July featured an elite groundball tilt and excellent command: 7.7 Dom, 1.8 Ctl, 58% GB%, 125 BPV. Don't forget that Morton got a lot of attention two years ago for overhauling his delivery, drawing comparisons to the one used by Roy Halladay. As a groundball machine with a 93 mph average fastball velocity, the comparisons go beyond his delivery. There's still more upside here than most will realize, especially considering that he's two years removed from Tommy John surgery now.

Ricky Nolasco (RHP, LA) had a nifty 3.00 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in July. While his 75 BPV that month did not support such nice surface stats, his fastball increased by 0.5 mph and his swinging strike rate jumped by 1.7% to an elite 12.7% level. Don't sell high.

Wily Peralta (RHP, MIL) enjoyed a big skill spike in July after posting an ugly 15 BPV in June: 7.8 Dom, 3.6 Ctl, 57% GB%, 80 BPV. He also posted a 95.1 mph average fastball velocity and a high 10.7% swinging strike rate. With top-tier raw stuff and a high groundball rate, Peralta has an extremely intriguing profile and makes for a good stretch-run stash if you can stomach his all-too-frequent blowups (26% PQS-DIS%).

Jordan Zimmermann (RHP, WAS) had a horrible showing in July, at least on the surface (7.18 ERA, 1.59 WHIP). But he was one of the unluckiest SP in MLB that month: 38% H%, 58% S%, 21% hr/f. His base skills remained excellent: 8.2 Dom, 2.1 Ctl, 44% GB%, 114 BPV. No reason to jump ship.
