F/F SPOTLIGHT: Jorge Mateo

To paraphrase the Dinah Washington song: What a Diff'rence a Month Makes. Specifically, what a difference a month has made in the 2023 perception of BAL SS Jorge Mateo. Mateo rang up a $20 5x5 season in 2022, thanks largely to 13 HR and 35 SB offsetting a .221 BA, and all of which were supported by the underlying numbers (12 xHR, 80% SB rate on a near-50% go rate, .225 xBA).

As we rolled into 2023, though, fantasy drafters everywhere seemed not to have bought into that $20 projection. Mateo’s ADP in NFBC 15-team drafts from March 1 on was in the 16th round, a round after Vaughn Grissom of ATL, an untried rookie with major questions, and five rounds after DET SS Javier Báez (!), coming off a $14 campaign with four more HRs than Mateo, 17...
