Nick Pivetta throws more sweepers to RHH
Nick Pivetta (RHP, BOS) added a sweeper last season and increased the usage from 9% (2023) to 38.9% (2024) against right-handed hitters. Though the results regressed from a .153 wOBA (2023) to a .308 wOBA (2024), Pivetta's sweeper allowed a .229 xwOBA, suggesting better outcomes versus righties.
Instead of mixing in the four-seam with the curve, slider, or cutter, which he primarily did before 2024, he relies heavily on the four-seam (45%) and sweeper against right-handed hitters, evidenced by the pitch usage chart above. Pivetta's sweeper elicits a 17.6% SwK, leading his arsenal of pitches.
