It’s no secret that professional baseball has undergone massive changes this century in terms of how players are valued and how best to generate runs. The emphasis on power has resulted in a decrease of high-contact hitters who offer on-base skills rather than over-the-fence power. The resulting acceptance of higher strikeout rates and whiffs has shown that you can still be productive without sustaining even an average contact rate. While it has become much harder to sustain a major league role with just a hit tool, it still remains true that you can’t really hack it in the major leagues if you can’t make enough contact.
