RESEARCH: What does average launch angle tell us?

Introduction

The term Launch Angle has become part of our baseball vernacular.  It seems every week there’s another story about a hitter who has deliberately increased his launch angle. It is understood that an increased launch angle is associate with more fly balls, which is associated with more home runs.  Thanks to Statcast, average launch angle is now mentioned frequently in baseball writing as well as on broadcasts.

The additional data is welcome, but we have some questions. How much does average launch angle tell us?  If an average launch angle increases, does the proportion of good outcomes also increase?  What is the best average launch angle?  Are the answers the same for all types of hitters?  Is launch angle consistent...
