RESEARCH: Monthly Park Effects

Introduction
It’s May, and spring has arrived across North America. Ballparks are heating up, and as they do, baseballs are flying further. The seasons also bring changes in wind patterns and humidity, each of which also affects batted balls. But how much? And do the differences in the baseball’s “carry” explain the differences in the deserved-HR park factors? Today we’ll find out.

Methodology
Using batted balls from 2015-2016, we calculate how far a batted ball should have carried based on its launch angle and exit velocity, then compare how far fly balls actually did travel relative to the expected value. We’ll tabulate this by ballpark. We’ll split the data by month to see how park factors change with the calendar,...
