Are Plate Discipline Metrics Useful?

Batter plate discipline metrics are often mentioned to provide evidence for a power breakout or an improved eye. At BaseballHQ.com, we have long-established metrics such as PX, bb%, and ct% that are already quite reliable.  Can we use plate discipline metrics to improve our understanding of a batter?

We consider three metrics and examine whether they increase our understanding of a batter’s plate skills (bb% and ct%) or power (PX):

  • Chase (CH) – percentage of swings at balls out of the zone
  • Zone-Swing% (ZS) – swings at pitches in the zone
  • Contact%  (CO) – percentage of swings that result in contact (not to be confused with BHQ's ct%)
