This is the first in a series of articles that will try to help you better incorporate Statcast metrics into the toolbox we use at BaseballHQ.com.
Our method will be to identify the BaseballHQ.com stats and metrics that have at least a moderate correlation (r 0.30) to the Statcast metric being studied.
Let's start by looking at the average exit velocity (EV) allowed by starting pitchers.
Summary
It turns out that there are only two stats in our toolbox that have at least a moderate correlation with average EV, and both are well-known measures:
ERA (r = 0.34)
HR/9 (r = 0.31)
