Last month, this column took an initial look at the similarities and differences between three approaches to valuation: the Percentage Value Method (PVM), the Standings Gain Points (SGP) method, and the z-score method. Please refer back to that column for background information relevant to these three valuation systems. In a nutshell, the results of 10,000 simulated drafts showed a slight advantage for the z-score method over the other two methods, which was attributed to the well-balanced rosters that arose from that method. Based on that initial set of results, and on thoughtful reader comments posted in the article and in the BaseballHQ.com forums, this follow-up study was performed.
