RESEARCH: PITCHf/x Data... for batters

In the May 24 edition of our BaseballHQ Radio podcast, Cory Schwartz, the VP Stats at MLB Advanced Media, talked about the massive increase in stats available to teams and fantasy owners—and the challenge in using those data to better understand and project player performance.

One of the great advances Schwartz mentioned was developing and deploying PITCHf/x, the cameras-and-computers system that allows every pitch thrown in every stadium to be tracked, and every outcome to be logged.

Though most research and interest in PITCHf/x looks at pitcher effectiveness, for obvious reasons, we started thinking about the relationship of batters’ outcomes, relative to how often, and how effectively, they swing at pitches.
