Pitchers, even the best ones, are not finished products when they get to the major leagues. Sometimes, pitchers can get to the big league level quicker than they should because the major league club is in in a pennant race and has immediate needs. Those prospects can come up before they have refined a third pitch, and sometimes they do not even come up with a third pitch. The elite pitchers can dominate lower levels so well that they rarely have to worry about controlling the running game with moves over to first or altering their pacing to home plate to disrupt stolen base attempts.
