Introduction
Back in 2013, Patrick Davitt wrote a fascinating research article that showed that we should not avoid pitchers after they have high-pitch-count (PC) starts, especially high-PQS (Pure Quality Starts) efforts. Though on the surface it seemed counterintuitive, these starts actually increased the likelihood of a solid performance in the subsequent start.
Since then, BaseballHQ.com has redefined the PQS scoring methodology aimed at reflecting how the game has changed as well as achieving a more normalized distribution of PQS scores. Armed with fresher data and a NewPQS, we struck out to revisit this research.
