RESEARCH: Examining the 2013 SB Decline 2: Managerial Decisions

In Part 1 of examining the 2013 stolen base decline, we noted the significant decline in stolen bases (SB) and started to discern the cause. Identifying the cause would give us a better basis to set expectations for the coming season, and a more solid foundation from which to rank players, formulate drafting strategies and set category targets.

There are three plausible explanations for the 2013 decline:

  1. Decreased opportunity
  2. Managerial decision
  3. Change in the player pool

Part 1 focused on opportunity then bridged into managerial decision. This installment will briefly re-embark on opportunity then continue to dissect managerial decision. Part 3 will examine the composition of the player pool on a league-wide and team-by-team...
