As spring nears and baseball (rightfully) regains the attention of the fantasy landscape, many a new strategy article will bloom across the Internet with some version of the popular adage "you can't win your draft in the first round, but you can lose it." It seems a reasonable proposition, but is it accurate?
To analyze this question, we examined the results of the 26 individual leagues in the 2011 National Fantasy Baseball Championship Main Event. The NFBC serves as an interesting laboratory as the format (15 team mixed, 5x5) is relatively standard, allowing us to apply the results more generally. Also, the NFBC doesn't allow trading, removing a potentially complicating factor.
