As we await the inevitable promotion and big-league debut of Elly De La Cruz (SS, CIN), it’s worth considering the effect he may have on the rest of the Reds’ defensive alignment. That begins with De La Cruz himself, who has played just under three-quarters of his games at shortstop this season. Since being promoted for his own big-league debut, Matt McLain (SS, CIN) has manned shortstop and hit well, even if a bit overperforming his skills (.333 BA vs. .271 xBA; 115 PX vs. 87 xPX). Defensively, McLain has been good enough at the position (1 defensive run saved).
