AL West: Time to get Rowdy in Seattle?

The Mariners currently have Luke Raley projected to play first base, designated hitter, or outfield. That does not lock in a full-time first baseman. This spring, a surprise candidate has emerged with the Mariners. That surprise is non-roster invitee Rowdy Tellez.

For a few seasons, high expectations surrounded Tellez, but it never came to fruition. Tellez hit 35 home runs in 2022 but only 13 home runs in the last two years with less than 56 RBI and 38 runs scored. These are not the numbers you’d hope for when considering a power-hitting first baseman. It seemed Rowdy’s days were done when the Pirates DFA’d Tellez in 2024, just a few plate appearances shy of a bonus. 

It appears all may not be lost, as the Mariners...
