BHQ SPIN: In all likelihood, Hosmer will open the season as Chicago’s first baseman, with Matt Mervis either beginning the year in Triple-A or serving as the team’s designated hitter. The veteran first baseman is coming off of a solid but unspectacular season split between San Diego and Boston (.268/.334/.382, 104 wRC+). Although Mervis is less likely to open the season in Chicago’s lineup due to the Hosmer signing, he would still be a strong candidate for an early-season call-up if he begins the year in Triple-A as the two could easily coexist depending on the team’s designated hitter usage.
