Someday, someone will come up with a good reason why fantasy players feel remorse after their drafts. We don’t mean anecdotal evidence but some hard studies. After Draft Day many fantasy players feel the reverse of the Endowment Effect, where instead of overvaluing what they own they undervalue it. The more experienced fantasy owner falls prey to this less often than the tyro, but doubt still creeps into their psyches. After that first 1-10, they start to have doubts. When Tim Lincecum gets hammered the doubts strengthen. And then, one blown save and panic sets in. We are here to help.

Springtime in New York City—70 degrees, birds are singing, sidewalk cafes are full of hungry diners. What better way to spend the afternoon than sitting in a dark, noisy Irish bar drinking Guinness and drafting a fantasy baseball team? At least 11 other people shared this belief, so we got together in Manhattan to carry out the second annual draft in the NYC Roto500 league.

Cell phones don’t cause cancer. There is no Verducci Effect. Nostradamus didn’t predict anything. And players don’t play harder or better in contract-year seasons. All of these theses are examples of the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy. Here we examine two examples that run rampant in fantasy baseball circles, and one surprising example that may hit a little close to home for the fantasy baseball player.

Embrace the crazy in your draft-and-hold league. Here's a non-boring, pedal-to-the-floor alternative to the traditional approach to drafting—a method that embraces the crazy person waiting inside most (if not all) of us. It's certainly fun, and you just may win something.

Looking at Reliability measures to help with roster composition in Draft and Hold leagues can be particularly instructive because of the permanence of the initial draft. For strategic owners, Reliability grades can be used through the early rounds to help secure predictable roster anchors and in the mid to later rounds, it can help filter amongst the remaining players.

Right out of the starting gate, draft and hold leagues, such as the 50-round draft/no pickups format offered through the National Fantasy Baseball Championship (NFBC), present some interesting strategic choices. Because draft and hold leagues do not allow for in-season transactions, such as add/drops or trades, getting off on the right foot is essential.
